10 Health Checks Every Woman Should Do In Her 40’s

Ageing is a part of life and it’s important to look after ourselves at any age. For women in their 40’s, there are certain health checks that become more of a priority. After 40 your metabolic system slows, and a host of other bodily changes occur, making it more imperative than ever to focus on your health and wellbeing. Paying attention to your diet, getting adequate exercise, and managing your stress levels are all essential factors. It is also important to get regular health checks.

What follows is a list of recommended health screenings that all women over the age of 40 should get.

1. Annual Physical Exam

Timing is everything. A yearly physical can pick up impending health issues before they become a problem. During your exam, your doctor may facilitate a number of tests based on your medical history, age, and lifestyle.

2. Blood Glucose

Measuring the amount of glucose in your blood can help in the diagnosis, monitoring, and even prevention of diabetes. Depending on your risk factors, you should get a blood glucose test annually, or at least every 3 years.

3. Eye Test

It is recommended for individuals to get an eye exam at least every two years, depending on their age and any risk factors. Eye care professionals will monitor your ocular health and look for signs of eye diseases and other health issues.

4. Hearing Test

Hearing loss often becomes an issue post 40, so hearing tests are very important in detecting potential problems early. Hearing experts recommend a hearing exam every 10 years until 50, and every 3 years from then on.

5. Blood Pressure Test

Most people should have their blood pressure tested every 2 years. This becomes more of a focus from the age of 40, particularly for those with high blood pressure, heart problems, or stroke in their family history.

6. Cholesterol

Women over the age of 40 should have their cholesterol screened, as cholesterol levels may increase with the onset of menopause. Increased cholesterol levels can greatly influence the risk of developing heart and blood vessel diseases.

7. Vaccinations

It is more important than ever to have your doctor determine that your vaccinations are up to date. The immunity acquired from certain vaccinations can wear off over time, and keeping on top of your vaccines will ensure that you’re protected.

8. Cervical Cancer Exam

Cervical cancer screenings are important for women of any age but are more important for women over 40. A Cervical Screening Test can detect strains of Human Papillomavirus (HPV). HPV can act as the root cause of cervical cancers.

9. Breast Exam

During regular medical checks, a doctor will conduct a clinical breast exam. The doctor will look for any abnormalities in your breasts, under the breastbone, and underarms and will also guide you as to how to check yourself at home.

10. Bone Density Test

A Bone Mineral Density Test can detect the presence or risk of osteoporosis. Those over 40 with a family history of osteoporosis, should be tested.
